Dr. Hollis joined Coastal Orthopedics Associates in 1989.   Dr. Hollis has been elected by his department to serve as the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Beverly Hospital for several consecutive terms and he still serves in that leadership role at present time.  Dr. Hollis also holds privileges at Atlantic Coast Surgical Suites in Seabrook, NH, New England Surgery Center in Beverly and Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington.  He serves on the Medical Executive Committee and is actively involved in other committees related to clinical quality, joint replacement initiatives and general orthopedics at the Beverly Hospital. Dr. Hollis is consistently a recognized leader in clinical quality benchmarks within his department and a steward of patient safety and quality at the hospital.

Dr. Hollis grew up playing hockey and has always enjoyed sports and being able to be active.  He enjoys skiing throughout the country and also competitive sailing in the North Shore area. Both of these activities require a level of functionality that Dr. Hollis understands and appreciates. His educational background, coupled with his decades of experience, as well as his pragmatic approach to the specialty of orthopedics, affords Dr. Hollis the ability to deliver care and information to his patients in a way that they can easily understand. Dr. Hollis works with his patient base to select care paths that are best suited for each individual.

He believes that much of healthcare is about “information, both scientific knowledge and technical information that the physician possesses, and the personal information from the patient about the nature of a particular concern and how it affects one’s life."

He places a high emphasis on patient-optimization, (making sure that his patients are thoroughly prepared for surgical procedures), and patient education, in order to ensure the best possible outcomes for his patients and takes time to share information with patients and to listen to the information that patients are sharing with him. The exercise of “information sharing” serves as the foundation for exploring treatment alternatives that are best suited to an individual patient’s circumstances and that best serve the patient's needs.

This is the essence of what is now called, “shared decision making,” which Dr. Hollis points out, is a capstone to the Coastal Orthopedics culture of patient care.

Dr. Hollis knows that it is important for patients to understand that surgery is not always the best option for their physical problem and he strives to deliver individualized care that is best suited for each patient. He educates his patients about what current medical technology offers for treatment of their problem, what the different options are, the pros and cons and trade-offs between the options and works to explain what technologies have been proven to work best for their particular issue.
