Prestigiously trained orthopedic surgeon expands access to advanced hip and knee replacement care on the North Shore

Coastal Orthopedics is pleased to announce that Joseph Gibian, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement, will join the practice in September. His arrival marks the return of joint replacement services to Coastal Orthopedics, expanding access to advanced orthopedic care for patients throughout the North Shore.

Meet Joseph Gibian, MD, Joint Replacement Surgeon

Dr. Gibian specializes in the treatment of hip and knee conditions, including primary joint replacement, complex revision surgery, anterior approach hip replacement, and robotic-assisted joint replacement when appropriate. He believes every patient's care should be tailored to their unique anatomy, goals, and lifestyle, utilizing both traditional and advanced surgical techniques to achieve the best possible outcomesHis addition allows patients to receive highly specialized joint replacement care closer to home, reducing the need to travel into Greater Boston for advanced orthopedic treatment.

Dr. Gibian completed both his orthopedic surgery residency and hip and knee replacement fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, home to one of the nation's leading orthopedic training programs. His residency and fellowship provided advanced training in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, complex adult reconstruction, robotic-assisted surgery, and the latest surgical techniques and technology.

Prior to his orthopedic training, Dr. Gibian earned a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology and Physiology from the University of Maryland before attending Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. While at Vanderbilt, he served as Vice President of his medical school class and was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in recognition of his academic achievement and leadership.

Dr. Gibian is committed to providing personalized, patient-centered care and believes successful orthopedic treatment begins with a strong physician-patient relationship built on trust, communication, and shared decision-making. He works closely with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan focused on relieving pain, restoring mobility, and helping them return to the activities they enjoy most. He takes the time to ensure patients understand all available treatment options, whether non-operative management or surgery. By carefully evaluating each patient's individual needs, Dr. Gibian recommends the approach he believes will provide the best possible outcome, whether that involves non-operative care, traditional joint replacement, or robotic-assisted surgery.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Gibian has remained actively involved in orthopedic research focused on improving outcomes following hip and knee replacement surgery and evaluating modern implants, technology, and surgical techniques. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals and presented at national orthopedic meetings.

Originally from Frederick, Maryland, Dr. Gibian and his family look forward to making Massachusetts their home and becoming part of the North Shore community.
